On Saturday the Speedway GP World Cup 2023, Kim Nilsson surged to a surprise victory in the FIM GP Challenge in Glasgow, winning a run-off ahead of FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff champion Dan Bewley to top the podium after they were equal on 13 points. In a run-off for third place, Jack Holder upset FIM Speedway of Nations world title-winning pair Max Fricke to earn the last Speedway GP World Cup 2023 qualifying spot.

Kim Nilsson of Sweden, Dan Bewley of the United Kingdom, and Jack Holder of Australia are the first riders to secure their places in the Speedway GP World Cup 2023 FIM Speedway Grand Prix series. On Saturday, Nilsson blasted to a surprise victory in the FIM GP Challenge in Glasgow, winning a run-off ahead of FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff champion Bewley to top the podium after they were equal on 13 points.
Holder earned the last Speedway GP World Cup 2023 qualifying spot by defeating FIM Speedway of Nations world title-winning teammate Max Fricke in a run-off for third place after finishing equal on 12. Speedway GP racer Anders Thomsen tumbled out of the FIM GP Challenge with a fractured leg on a dramatic night in Scotland. This happened only a few days after 2012 world champion Chris Holder was sent to the hospital after collapsing awkwardly in heat 12, with following French racer David Bellego unable to dodge the wounded Aussie and collapsing into him. Holder revealed he had a fractured collarbone, two broken ribs, and a lower back bone shattered.
While fans await additional updates on the wounded pair’s health, Nilsson had a night to remember as he prepares for full-time Speedway GP life in Speedway GP World Cup 2023.
“I wouldn’t have believed it, certainly not winning the meeting,” the shocked Swede added. My objective was to finish in the top three, but I had no idea what to expect. “I’d never been to Glasgow before, and I was simply curious.” Next year, I want to be more open-minded. I’m going to give it my all and attempt to put together a decent team around me so that I can perform as well as I can.
“Right now, I don’t have such great hopes at the Speedway GP World Cup 2023.” During the winter, I plan to construct stuff. I’ll simply try my best in every heat and give it my all. I can’t do anything else.”
No. 5 in the world Sweden’s lone Speedway GP rider in 2022 is Fredrik Lindgren, and Nilsson is thrilled to be boosting the country’s representation on the sport’s largest stage. “It’s definitely essential for Swedish speedway,” he continued. I believe that adding another Swede – and a new name – may be beneficial. I really hope it has an impact on Swedish speedway.”
Bewley, a British icon, may have secured his Speedway GP World Cup 2023 qualification for another year. But, after moving up to fourth position in the 2022 rankings with a win in Cardiff last weekend, he will not be taking his foot off the throttle, as he is just one point behind third-place Patryk Dudek.
“After the final few rounds, the goal is to attempt to obtain a medal,” said the Cumbrian. It’s wonderful to have qualified since you never know what will happen in speedway. It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. Hopefully, I won’t need it, but if I do, it’ll be useful. It was a fantastic night, and it was great to be back in Glasgow.”
Third-placed Holder had to overcome the trauma of witnessing his elder brother Chris depart Ashfield in an ambulance after crashing in race 12 at the Speedway GP World Cup 2023, as their family watched from the grandstand.
But the Speedway GP World Cup 2023 star kept his cool to take the last qualifying spot, ensuring himself a second consecutive season in the SGP World Championship.
“It all started off great, but then the red lights came on in heat 12 and I saw Chris on the ground,” Holder said. “I swiftly came to a halt, and I could tell he was in some agony, but it was a tough one because I had to keep racing.” Speedway GP World Cup 2023 it was obviously a mental challenge. It was difficult to watch him like that while I had to go about my business. However, it is what it is. I managed to retain my cool and finish the work.”
The top six finishers in this year’s Speedway GP, as well as the winner of the Speedway European Championship and five wild cards determined by the SGP Commission, will all qualify for the 2023 series.

Fricke will obtain the qualifying spot earned at the FIM GP Challenge after finishing fourth in Glasgow if either Bewley or Holder finish in the top six at this year’s Speedway GP. British talent Robert Lambert finished fifth with 10 points, the same as Danish champion Rasmus Jensen, who finished sixth. This year’s World Championship race resumes next Saturday with the Betard FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Wroclaw, followed by the Beckhoff FIM SGP3 of Poland on Friday afternoon for the sport’s under-16 stars.
